If the site is getting 50 million unique visitors per month, quite a few people are obviously finding it useful (mind you, I m not one of them: I don’t have the time to read 941 reviews of the Piazza San Marco or 3,591 reviews of the Eiffel Tower).Travel writers like to hype the superiority of professionally-written reviews, but as you pointed out different people have different tastes, so what Rick Steves thinks of a family-owned budget hotel in Paris, or what Karen Brown thinks of a charming inn in Salzburg, may not matter to me if I’m into student hostels or big luxury hotels.On our travel-planning site, we have some in-depth hotel reviews, but we also have many listings of hotels with links to pages at Venere.com and Booking.com that feature guest reviews. The latter are convenient for our readers, because we’ve done a lot of the filtering for them. For example, when reading about Venice (or highest-traffic destination), readers are presented with listings of decent hotels in various price categories that are organized by location or by appropriateness for certain needs (near the railroad station, handy to the cruise terminals or airport transportation, etc). By adding value to existing online resources through our curatorial efforts (to use a currently-popular buzzword), we make life easier for our readers, increase reader engagement, and earn affiliate revenue in the bargain.
